Every season, someone steps onto a ship to run the programme for 150 guests and finds out on Day 3 whether anyone prepared them.
Maddy Căldărușe found out in 2000, in front of the room, with her hands shaking too badly to read the script. She has spent the 26 years since making sure the next person does not.
The people on this page are what came of that. Hotel operations managers, pursers, destination experts, tour guides and security officers who already knew hospitality — and then trained for the specific craft of leading a European river cruise: port operations and documentation, excursion management, crisis response, destination narration river by river, and the leadership standard we call the RIVER Method®.
Four are certified. Six are working through the academy now. They come from Bulgaria, Romania, Portugal, Hungary and Colombia, and they are all training for the same job — River Cruise Manager, called Cruise Director or Program Director depending on the company.

Everyone here trained to one standard first: 62 lessons, five days onboard a river cruise ship, and a final project assessed at a pass mark of 80. Each profile says whether that person is certified or still working through it. The standard is Maddy Căldărușe's — 160+ managers trained, 97%+ guest satisfaction from a first cruise — and her mentorship runs a year past enrollment. It does not stop when you hire them.

Nobody here is starting over. Twenty years of hotel operations. Seven seasons on the Douro. A decade of guest service, a purser's ledger, a guide's licence. You are not hiring potential — you are hiring a career that already exists.
What the academy adds is the layer the river cruise world assumes and almost nobody teaches: the vocabulary, the documentation, the port choreography, and the narration.

They trained for the craft
62 lessons across 4 modules. More than 100 interactive tools, crisis simulators among them. Interactive destination training, river by river — a whole route walked stop by stop, with the narration a manager actually says out loud, the locks, the water levels, the history, the photographs.
A live session every week. Five days onboard a river cruise ship. A final project assessed against a pass mark of 80.

The first three cruises are covered
Being hired is not the finish line. The first three cruises are where a new manager either finds their feet or quietly comes apart, and that is usually the part a line absorbs alone.
Not here. 100% support until one year after academy enrollment: nine private sessions, preparation before each of the first three cruises, debriefs after, and crisis support in between. Whoever you hire from this page brings their mentor with them.
