July 2000. I fainted on a Bucharest bus.
I was working at Elle Magazine—glamorous title, exhausted body, empty life. My sister called two days later about a temporary job on a river cruise ship. I almost said no.
My first welcome speech? I cried in front of 150 American guests. I didn't speak English well. I almost got fired twice in my first year.
Nobody told me this was going to be hard. Nobody gave me a community. I was completely alone.
That's exactly why I built this.
I didn't want other people to feel that way. So I started training people. Then mentoring them. Then creating spaces where they could find each other.
