I Almost Got Fired Twice Before I Figured This Out
Now I've trained 130+ Cruise Managers for a top river cruise company — every single one still thriving. Here's how I went from crying in front of 150 guests to building Europe's first River Cruise Leadership Academy.
July 17, 2000: The Day Everything Changed
Two days before that call, I fainted on a packed Bucharest bus. 40°C. Nobody helped. I was working at Elle Magazine — glamorous title, empty life, barely surviving on my salary.
My sister called about a "two-week job" on a river cruise ship. I almost said no.
I had no idea what a cruise manager did. No training. No manual. No mentor. They just put me on the ship and said, "Your colleague is leaving for her honeymoon. Tomorrow, you start."
Day three, I had to deliver a welcome speech to 150 American guests.
My hands were shaking so badly I couldn't read my script. My voice cracked. I started crying — right there, in front of everyone. I couldn't understand their questions.
I wanted to disappear.
I Almost Didn't Make It
Twice in my first years, I was nearly fired.
The first time, I found out from a LOCAL GUIDE who said, "Oh, I heard you got let go. Are you still working with them?" I had no idea I was on the chopping block.
The second time, someone from the office came to "check on me." After three days of watching me struggle, she said something I'll never forget:
"Maddy, I was sent here to let you go. But I see the passion in your eyes. I see how the guests love you. So I'm going to keep you — and I'm going to be your mentor."
That moment saved my career.
I promised myself: if I survive this, I'll make sure no one else has to start like I did.
From Crying Newcomer to Industry Trainer
Since that terrifying first speech, I've:
✓ Navigated every major European river — Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine, Rhône, Moselle, Main, and more
✓ Achieved 98%+ guest satisfaction ratings — consistently, cruise after cruise
✓ Spent 13 years as internal trainer for a top river cruise company — developing 130+ Cruise Managers from the ground up
✓ Been the ongoing mental support for 120 cruise managers — the person they called at 2am when things went wrong
✓ Watched every single one of them succeed and STAY successful in their careers
✓ Built Europe's first comprehensive river cruise leadership academy
✓ Helped 2 recent Academy graduates get hired at a leading river cruise company — €300+/day
✓ Created a career that pays well above €75,000/year — working only 120 days
The crying girl who couldn't answer a single question? She became the person companies call when they need cruise managers trained.
That promise became my mission.
17 Years Later, She Came Back
From the Shores of the Danube to the Heart of River Cruising
In 2009, a young Romanian woman started as a receptionist at a top cruise company. I was there. We worked together briefly.
She went on to become a Finance Manager, then a Hotel General Manager on cruise ships. Impressive career. But something was missing.
Seventeen years later, she enrolled in my Academy.
"I needed a mentor," she told me. "Companies don't invest in your development."
That's Alina. And her story is exactly why I built this.
This isn't a course you finish and forget. It's a relationship. I'm still in touch with cruise managers I trained over a decade ago. I answer their questions. I celebrate their promotions. I'm there when things go wrong.
That's what mentorship means.
People Need People
One of my students recently worried about AI replacing cruise managers.
I told them: "People need people in hospitality. That's not changing anytime soon."
Guests don't want a chatbot when their excursion is cancelled. They don't want an algorithm when they're celebrating an anniversary. They want a human who cares.
Technology is changing how we access information — I remember lugging heavy books to prove facts to guests. Now we have phones. But technology will never replace the human connection that makes hospitality magical.
My job is to help you become that irreplaceable human. The one guests remember. The one crew they trust. The one companies fight to keep.
That takes more than lessons. It takes mentorship. Community. Support.
It takes someone who's been there.
I've been there. Let me help you get there too.
